PRINCE2 is a scalable, flexible project management method. Derived from professional Project Managers' experiences, it has been steadily refined thanks to its application in a wide variety of contexts. It is owned by a U.K. public authority, the Office of Government Commerce (OGC). The OGC has made an ongoing commitment to maintaining the currency of the method and the tools, information and handbooks that go with it. The latest version of this steadily evolving method was issued in 2009, with the release of a pair of handbooks tailored to the two management levels of a project management team.
This new release has made the method even more user-friendly and accessible, and it continues to be free to use.
